Spaten Franziskaner Hefeweisse Dunkel

High estery aroma like a weisse. Dark color with some cloudiness. Grainy smell with slight banana. Heavy mouthfeel. Not as deep a malt as a lot of dunkel. Nice hop beginning as opposed to finish. Finish was more malts and grains. This is somewhat the reverse of what is expected. Very good for a dunkel.
Rating: 4/5.

  1. That's interesting, Jay, but what do you mean "very good for a dunkel"? What exactly is a dunkel and what makes it different from a...non-dunkel?

  2. Good question Meg. Dunkel means "dark". Weizens, a beer with a lot of wheat malt, are usually light. The addition of dark roasted barley malt gives it a dark color. This should also add some traditional malt flavors.
